that's what jim demint has been trying to say. if you were back at your old job, rnc chair, you may be there again for all i know, how would you repair this thing? would you go to demint and his crowd moving to the outside to sort of build their sort of logger out there to fight the establishment or would you say, wait a minute, the future is dead center conservative. it's not fringy, it's not john birch, not going over -- >> i would remind them we're a center right party very much like the country -- >> i don't agree with that. >> the country is center right. >> they just voted for obama. >> center left. >> that's another show. we'll have that conversation. but the country is center right in large measure. >> we can't have another arithmetic system. >> this is not about the math. this is about the facts and the realities on the ground. >> the facts. the numbers. >> 51% of the people identify themselves as pro-life. that's center right. >> they don't support outlawing -- >> another show. >> they don't believe in outlawing abortion

people like jim demint can't stand people like that. they feel the party has become to easy to capitulate. remember with the budget control act when democrats were screaming bloody murder and thought the president had capitulated? on the far right they thought john boehner and mitch mcconnell had capitulated and lost that negotiation. they want the party further and further to the right. what demint specializes in doing is finding candidates to primary other republicans and to try to push the party further and further to the outskirts. >> what the do you think of that? >> i think there's some truth to that. what is interesting to me is during the bush years, where were all these voices when all the spending was going on? >> he wasn't -- >> there's a certain level of disingenuousness there. you have to be careful in making these broad brush -- >> let me ask you a question. if you were back at your old job, rnc chair, you may be there again for all i know, how would you imp pir this thing? would you go to demint and his crowd moving to th

south carolina senator jim demint went so far as to call on supporters of his senate conservative fund to call senate republicans and ask them to oppose what he's calling the boehner tax hike. the looming question for republicans what may be willing to compromise is what's your bottom line? the fallback position that is most likely at this point may turn out to be extending the middle class tax cuts through the end of the year and then continuing this fight in the run-up the need to raise the debt ceiling the end of january or early february. just what we need for it to drag on even longer. we're back with more show after the break. stay with us. jennifer >>>> it's these "talking points" that the right have about "the heavy hand of government". i want to have that conversation. let's talk about it. really. really! that you're gonna lay people off because now the government's going to help you fund your health care. really? i wanna be able to have those conversations. not just to be confrontational, but to understand what the other side is saying. and you know, i'd like to arm our viewe

jim demint, republican senator from south carolina. >> this is a time to negotiate with ourselves. we need to invite the president to work with us. his proposal was so outlandish, i don't think we should go back to the table until he puts something there that we can work with. the president has known about this fiscal cliff for over a year. and many of his decisions caused us to be in this position. >> how much of a problem does boehner have with other republicans potentially? >> it's a big problem. it's always been his problem. it's been a problem for the republican party since they started taking that no tax pledge 30 years ago. what is revenue increase? is closing deductions and loopholes a revenue increase? and if so, do you have to oppose that? i think what we see going on in the republican party right now is a fight between the stalwart, no new tax whatever conservatives and those who believe that they have a responsibility to keep the country from going over the fiscal cliff in the short term and in the long-term. and as jessica was pointing out earlier, the white house has

just into cnn, we have confirmed senator jim demint will step down as of december 31st. he's from south carolina. leading member of the tea party. he'll take over the head of the heritage foundation. cnn's dana bash live on capitol hill with more. why did senator demint decide to step down? >> we're trying to get more information from his aides. maybe find him in the hallways here. it's a bit of a surprise because demint has felt that he's been able to be effective here in congress because he has been kind of a conservative very willing to push his own leadership in ways that often times they don't want to be pushed with regard to deficit reduction, with regard to strict fiscal policy. that's by far his number one issue. i can tell you he's also really angered republican leaders over the past two election cycles by raising millions of dollars, a lot of money, for republican candidates who "establishment" thought were less able to win the general election. he is a purist. he's an anti-tax, anti-government purist. it does seem that he's kind of had it here. he wouldn't be
